This training is focused on rigid plastic packaging and explains the different components and constituents typically found in this packaging format. It provides a foundational understanding of how this type of packaging is made and which materials fulfil which function. It is intended to help the user fully understand all the technical detail of the requirements provided in design-for-recycling guidance for rigid plastic packaging.

• Typical rigid plastic packaging formats and their applications

• The nomenclature of the different parts of rigid plastic packaging in design-for-recycling guidelines

• Main materials used in rigid plastic packaging, their properties and how to check their impact on recyclability

• Additional elements such as additives, inks, adhesives, labels, and barrier coatings and how to check their impact on recyclability

• Typical processing methods: blow moulding, injection moulding and thermoforming, and their relationship to recyclability testing
